Built on Generosity
The vitality of Thubten Norbu Ling relies on one of Buddhism’s most important practices — generosity. Generosity is the reason The Buddhist Center Thubten Norbu Ling exists today. Every aspect of our work for the past 20 years is linked to the time, talents, and resources generously provided by members and friends. We are grateful for your trust, confidence, and generosity to fulfill our mission to provide the dharma as widely as possible to all who want it.
Most of our staff and team members offer their time and skills for free though we do offer some a stipend to compensate them for their hard work and expertise.
Through a membership and other charitable donations, you are making a real difference to the success of our center. You make it possible for Geshe Thubten Sherab to guide students as our resident teacher, to offer a robust and diverse spiritual program globally, and to support a community of students every day in their study and practice of the dharma.
Membership
We want to make supporting our center simple. In October 2020, we launched a new, single level of membership — $50 per month. This simplified structure provides members with access to all of TNL’s programming.
Members recognize the value of this new structure as well. We want to be generous with our membership and everything is included with a minimum $50 per month membership: all classes, meditations, pujas, weekend intensives, Saturday workshops – everything!
So why should individuals join with at least a $50 monthly to membership? The generosity of our members is driving the expansion of TNL’s programming — now over 20 events a week!
Sustaining these programs, adding new ones, and providing reasonable compensation for faculty and staff requires additional funding that comes through membership donations.
Right now, TNL members cover about half of our total monthly expenses — typically $12,000 – which is amazing!
Our goal is to cover all of our expenses through membership donations by 2022 — which means we will need at least 240 members.
Please use the Become a Member button to join Thubten Norbu Ling today and make this goal a reality.
As always, Thubten Norbu Ling offers access to all programs for free to anyone who cannot afford to pay.

Gifts of Cryptocurrency
The meteoric rise and popularity of cryptocurrency over the past couple of years has resulted in large gains in value. The IRS currently recognizes crypto as a non-cash asset and not a traditional currency. This means that as soon as you realize those gains by selling it, you are faced with some potentially significant tax consequences.
However, the IRS has also provided some avenues to minimize your tax burden while also helping your favorite 501(c)3 non-profit – hopefully The Buddhist Center Thubten Norbu Ling!
Here are two reasons to use your crypto to make a gift to our center:
1. It’s a convenient way to give through our partner Engiven
It’s fast and easy to give your crypto to The Buddhist Center through Engiven.
2. Avoid Capital Gains Tax and Maximize Your Gift
By giving the crypto to us directly through Engiven, you can avoid any potential tax consequences if you sell the crypto first. This allows you to give more, making your gift that much more beneficial!
IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution
If you are at least 70 ½ years of age, you may want to utilize the IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution, formerly known as the IRA Rollover Provision, as a tax-wise way to support our center. Choosing this option benefits you in two ways: first, the amount you distribute to Thubten Norbu Ling is excluded from taxable income; and second, when you reach age 73 the contribution counts toward your required minimum distribution (RMD).
Start by contacting your IRA account administrator to request a charitable distribution from your plan. Provide the administrator with our Tax ID number, 85-0483311, and instruct him or her to send the check, payable to Thubten Norbu Ling, to the following address:
Thubten Norbu Ling Buddhist Center
130 Rabbit Road
Santa Fe, NM 87508
Please review these important details before contacting your account administrator:
- You must be 70 ½ before transferring funds;
- To qualify as tax-free, your gift must be directly transferred from your IRA account to Thubten Norbu Ling;
- At age 73, the transfer may qualify — in part or in whole — for your yearly required minimum distribution;
- Your gift must be made by December 31 to qualify for that particular tax year;
The maximum amount per year eligible for tax-free transfer from your IRA is $100,000; - If you have a spouse, as defined by the IRS, who is 70 ½ or older and has an IRA, he or she can also transfer up to $100,000 from his or her IRA; and
- The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction.
Planned Gifts
We encourage friends of Thubten Norbu Ling to include us in your estate plans. These planned gifts, sometimes referred to as legacy commitments, allow you to honor family or friends, may offer some tax advantages, and help ensure TNL will fulfill its mission well into the future.
There are two easy, straight-forward ways to support us through your estate plans: include TNL in your will or trust and/or name us as a beneficiary of your IRA.
Including Thubten Norbu Ling in your will or trust can be accomplished by adding a single sentence to your legal documents:
“I, (insert your name), of (city, state and zip code), give, devise and bequeath to The Buddhist Center Thubten Norbu Ling Buddhist Center, Santa Fe, New Mexico, (enter specific amount or percentage of the estate or description of property) for its unrestricted use and purposes.”
Naming TNL as a beneficiary of your 401k, IRA, or life insurance policy is almost as easy. Please follow these four steps:
- Request a change of beneficiary form from your plan administrator;
- Determine the percentage of your 401k, IRA, or insurance benefit you would like Thubten Norbu Ling to receive;
- On the form, name us as a beneficiary and enter the specific percentage; and
- Return the completed form to your plan administrator.
Two final and important points:
Always consult with your attorney and/or tax advisor before taking any action with your estate plan.
Please notify TNL of your intentions to include us in your estate plans. You may email us at giving@tnlsf.org or write to us at 130 Rabbit Road, Santa Fe, NM, 87508.
