Just because we know something is good or bad for us, it doesn’t mean we always do it or avoid it easily. For example, we know smoking is bad but some people still do it. And we know being patient and kind is good, but we still get angry when someone cuts us off in traffic. To get better at being patient and kind, we need to learn special techniques that can help us change our bad habits.
The lamrim, or ‘Stages of the Path to Enlightenment’ is a condensed presentation of the teachings of the Buddha that contain many such techniques. It is organized into three scopes, the small, middling, and great, depending on the level of suffering the practitioner is motivated to overcome. In the next four weeks, we will learn techniques based on training within the three scopes of the lamrim that will help us stay calm and happy even when things around us are upsetting.
